The success of your e-commerce site depends largely on its visibility on search engines. As such, a site that is well optimized for search engine optimization (SEO) will enable you to be well positioned on the queries of Internet users. If you've chosen PrestaShop CMS to create or redesign your online store, you should know that the platform has several optimization parameters to help you achieve the best positioning on the web. Find out what you need to know about PrestaShop SEO.

Fill in the title and description meta tags

PrestaShop offers several tools for creating SEO-optimized product pages. The CMS allows you to enter custom values for all the fields in your online store. On Prestashop, go to the "Catalog" tab, then to "Categories" and fill in the required fields.

First of all, for the title tag, you'll need to use the product terms as concisely as possible (example: living room furniture coffee table). For the Meta description, you'll need to write a short description using terms and vocabulary directly related to the product. (e.g.: Discover our range of coffee tables for the living room, available in several colors and designed to fit in with your room).

Rewriting urls

In the "Simplified Url" field, all you need to do is repeat the title tag, but without the accent and replacing each space with a hyphen. In our example, this would be furniture-living-room-lower-table. There's a PrestaShop module that can help here: Url Cleaner / SEO performance. It will automatically remove URL IDs from all your category and product pages. The tool will also generate redirects on your new URLs, making them shorter and "cleaner".

Generate a sitemap

For the SEO of your PrestaShop site, you can count on another equally useful feature for generating a sitemap: the SEO sitemap generator. As a reminder, a sitemap is a file containing information on the pages, videos and other files present on a site. With PrestaShop's sitemap generator module, you can create an XML sitemap file for your online store. The sitemap file provides search engine spiders with a list of all the pages on your website to browse (and index).

Optimizing images: Alt tags, image weight

To optimize your SEO, the images on your site must contain alternative text that is both relevant and descriptive of the image. These Alt tags will help robots better understand your content. Note that images that have no other function than to illustrate your e-commerce site don't necessarily need Alt tags.

Another tip for optimizing the SEO of your PrestaShop online store relates to the weight of your images. The loading time of your website is one of the ranking criteria used by search engines. In other words, the heavier your images, the longer they will take to load. To improve your search engine ranking, we recommend that you use images smaller than 100KB. Similarly, JPEG and WEBP formats are preferable to larger formats such as GIF and PNG. Here too, PrestaShop offers dedicated modules such as SEO images alt tag.

Managing redirects

Redirects are very useful when you want to redirect your visitors to another page in your online store. 301 redirects, unlike 302 redirects, have the least impact on your pages' SEO. Note that PrestaShop allows you to use a specific module entitled "301, 302, 303 URL redirections and 404 - SEO module". This provides you with an excellent interface for creating links for all types of redirections.

Use SEO modules

SEO on PrestaShop is greatly facilitated by the existence of a large number of specific modules designed to optimize your e-commerce site. Here is a selection of some useful modules for your natural referencing:

Advanced Search 5

This module allows you to create SEO pages according to very precise criteria such as category or attributes. You can also merge different criteria (e.g. Adidas sneakers, Adidas shorts). Note that the title and description metas for new pages will be created automatically. This feature allows you to create pages optimized for specific queries.

Hreflang module

If you have a multilingual online store, this module is a must. The Hreflang attribute tells search engines which language is used on a page, helping them to compile search results in that language. More specifically, this module will help robots to better understand that your website is available in several languages.

SEO Meta tags Manager module

This module lets you edit and generate SEO meta tags and Alt tags (image captions). This tool will be an invaluable aid in optimizing your title and description meta tags.
