Google's popular navigation application, once available free of charge, now requires a valid API key and a Google Cloud Platform billing account.

As of July 11, all sites using the Google Maps must enter their bank detailsUntil now, this has only been optional.

Another change: the free version no longer exists. In order to simplify its offering, Google has opted for an all-pay-as-you-go approach... or almost. As soon as a query is made on Maps, it will be billed. But Google wants to prevent publishers from fleeing, and is offering a limited free monthly package worth $200.

Fewer free calls

Until now, it was possible to integrate Google Maps data fairly freely, without too many restrictions. The terms and conditions of the Google Maps Platform allowed the equivalent of 25,000 calls per day to display a dynamic map free of charge.

The threshold has now been drastically lowered: over 28,000 views per month, additional calls will be billed.
